Ladies and Gentlemen, toys and Germans, welcome. Welcome to the inter-nerd home to the comedy of Ken Reid. This is a place to get away from the mundane existence of modern life and then be presented with the mundane HORRORS of modern life. ![]()
But only pop-culture maven Ken Reid would turn those references into an autobiographical one-man show." - Nick A. Zaino III - Boston Globe - Saturday, April 28, 2007.
I'm far too lazy to actually do html, so if you want the most up to date gigs etc, check out Ken Reid's MySpace page.
May 2008 Gang, "Very Special Episode" was a hit. It will be performed again in the future, so watch for it. In the mean time, keep checking my Myspace page for dates and blog updates, and also my birthday is coming up, buy me something from my wish list September 2006 September was INSANE. The Untrainables had a ton of shows, our Lafta Obscura show at the Paradise has been going great (come down to see us do stand up at the paradise on Sunday October 8th at 9pm it's only $5 and come to the next LO show on October 17th at the Paradise Lounge), we had a great show at Improv Asylum during the Boston Comedy Festival and threw ourselves up in front of some industry people as well. I also had a great month as comic in residence at the Comedy Studio, worked out a lot of new stuff and even got to host a few nights, which was a lot of fun. I also had the pleasure of presenting and performing at the 2006 Boston Music Awards. I had an amazing time and the collision of present and past Ken Reid worlds was pretty intense. I can't thank the people at NEMO enough for having me down. As many of you know my brain is filled with far too many things from television and movies. As a result of this, most of my adolesent life was a major dissapointment. 1. In High School did you have a prom king and queen? 2. In High School did you participate in a class in which you had to pretend to be married to someone? 3. In High School did you take a class in which you had to treat an inanimate object (such as an egg or bag of flour) as a baby? 4. Do you know what a "Homecoming" is? 5. Have you ever thrown pebbles at a window in order to wake/get someone's attention (or had this done to you)? 6. Have you ever serenaded (or been serenaded) while looking at (or out of) your bedroom window? 7. Did you ever participate in a cruel and overly elaborate practical joke? 8. Where you ever the victim of a cruel yet elaborate practical joke? (and if so, did this cause you to grow up to be a maniacal, sexually repressed slasher murderer?) 9. Did you ever have a tomboy friend who was secretly in love with you (or were you a tomboy friend who was secretly in love)? 10. Girls only: Were you considered ugly until you let down your hair and threw off your glasses ever? 11. Did you ever date anyone as a bet/joke and then actually fall in love with them? 12. Did you ever have to win a contest/sporting event/paegent in order to save a store/cinema/rec center/mom and pop store? 13. Have you ever befriended a monster? 14. Have you ever witnessed or participated in any of the following: Wet T-Shirt Contest, Jell-o (or mud) wrestling and/or any sort of anotomical measuring contest? 15. Have you ever mistakenly switched bags with someone at an airport/bus terminal etc and had their bag contain some sort of contraband (ie diamonds, microfilm, etc)? 16. Have you ever been friends with Anthony Edwards or Dean Cameron? 17. Have you ever (or known anyone ever) that had a nickname that was not based on a variation of their name at all? 18. Have you ever had a celebrity (Nancy Reagan, Mr. T, etc) ever come to your school or home to teach you a lesson about something (ie drugs, teen pregnancy, etc)? 19. Have you ever lived in a beach house/ski house/etc with a group of friends? 20. Have you ever become a werewolf/vampire/witch/zombie either through encountering one of these or through hereditary means? 21. Have you ever uttered either of the following phrases completely free of any traces of irony or sarcasm: "This is going to be a great year" or "This is going to be a great summer" 22. Have you ever gone on a road trip with your friends? If yes did that road trip involve seeing a dead body? 23. Do you feel you've "come of age"? 24. Have you ever been the subject of a makeover by a popular girl/group of girls/angel/genie/alien/or other such fashionable being? 25. Have you ever officially (or unofficially) participated in a loss of virginity contest? I appreciate your help. Thank you Friday April 14, 2006 Far too many things happened. Aspen, CO was easily the greatest week of my life and the second near religious experience I've ever had. I blooged the whole thing HERE for the Comedy Studio. So read all about it there. I've joined up with three great local comics (Renata Tutko, Sean Sullivan and Nate Johnson)to form a sketch troupe called The Untrainables. we have been doing sketches every Thursday night on the Walsh Bros' Great and Secret Show and on Dan Sally's show, as well as doing our own shows out and about (including a really fun one at Brandeis), check out our MYSPACE Page. Tuesday February 22, 2006 I'm stuck in PA for work. Last night I was in Hershey and I'm fairly certain I sprained my elbow. Last night I was in my hotel room about to brush my teeth and to my horror I realized I was out of tooth paste. The only thing remotely close to this hotel(which is more or less in the middle of nowhere) was a K-Mart that was across a highway. So I had to step over one of those metal highway barriers, I didn't realize that the other side of the barrier was a sheet of ice so I ended up slipping and falling really hard on my arm, convinced I broke it. Which would have been the worst part, except I realized a car was coming at me while I was laying on the highway so I ended up rolling out of the way into the ditch on the side of the road and not getting killed. BUt now my arm is killing me. So there I am, laying in a ditch in the side of the road in central PA, cold, alone, and with what I think is a broken arm and I think to myself, "Why hasn't anyone invented Mojito Cheesecake yet?". Anyways, my elbow dosen't seem too swollen and I can move it, and most importantly, I got my toothpaste. I also bought a hat at K-Mart. My ears were extremely cold so I purchased to only winter hat they had, a children's "Teen Titans" hat. So there was was, stomping back over to the hotel, in a suit, and a 3/4 cashmere jacket, clutching my toothpaste in my dead, painful maybe sprained arm, like Bob Dole with his pen, clad in a brand new Teen Titans hat. Not one of my proudest moments. Tonight I flew into Pittsburgh and fullfilled a life long dream of paying a visit to the Monroeville Mall. Yes, THE Mall where Dawn of the Dead was shot. It was very very bizarre. I realized my digital camera was out of batteries so sorry no pictures. But it was the closest I'll ever come to having a religious experience. I saw the JC Penny escalator Peter and Roger slid down, I saw where Roger got buried, the parking lot looks the same. It was moving. All that said I'll be happy to be home tomorrow. Wednesday January 18, 2006 It will come as no surprise to anyone who knows me that I love video stores. I say love, but I really mean I am obsessed with them. The happiest of my childhood memories that don't revolve around going to the movie theatre, revolve around either going to, coming home from, or being in a video store. So it's not surprise that THIS is my new favorite web site. Video stores will be gone within the next five years. It makes sense with On Demands, DVD, Netflix etc. But it still saddens me a bit. However, it's a bit of a mixed blessing. Last weekend, thanks to a tip off from Sean "The Human SS" Sullivan, I hit up, not one, not two, but three different video store that were liquidating their stock due to closing. Needless to say I went home with about 300 more VHS tapes that I had to have, but certainly don't need. If I dissapear for a while, it's probably because I'm either dead, under a stack of 80s teen comedy VHS tapes that fell on me, or I'm locked in my bedroom, watching said 80s teen comedy VHS tapes until my eyes are glazed over from Day-Glo clothing and bad excuses to for T & A.Friday January 13, 2006
As those in the know are aware, the Soda holocaust that was the discontinuation of my beloved Vanilla Coke was finalized December 31st, 2005.
At lunch today I ventured to Target and purchased a 12 pack. For the past two hours it has been chilling in my fridge. About ten minutes ago I cracked open the can. I. Scent - The bouquet is that of my love, Vanilla Coke, yet slightly more subtle. There is no hint of Cherry in the scent. Promising. II. Packaging - This retro futurism has gone a bit more into the futurism than the previous "Soda Shop Nostaligia" container that was Vanilla coke. I don't dislike it, but it is very 90s to me. I wish they'd bring back the purple checkarboard. III. TASTE - Very important. The Vanilla taste is there, yet subtle, it's in the background. It's the same vanilla flavor as before, just less of it. Contrary to what you may think this does not taste like what it would taste of if you mixed Cherry Coke (which I also love) with Vanilla Coke. The Black cherry is a much more...shall i say Fruity flavor, it's a darker, richer, yet less strong cherry flavor than Cherry Coke. I like it, but it wouldn't knock Cherry Coke off my ..1, or Vanilla my ..2.
Friday November 11, 2005 Despite all my best efforts, "Nasty Girl" by the Vanity Six has been locked in my skull for nearly 48 hours. I cannot imagine what I must have looked like last night, walking around Inman Square in Cambridge, muttering under my breath "Tonight, I think you better come with me, do you think I'm a nasty girl....Toooo-night, living in a fantasy, our own little nasty world..." while trying not to shake my money maker while I did it. Watching a grown man fight the urger to do a dance similar to MJ's in "Beat It" has to be both frightening and hilarious at the same time.
Friday November 4, 2005 Last night I went to the opening night of the Boston Jewish Film Festival (despite the fact that I am neither Boston nor Jewish) to see the local premire of Sarah Silverman's "Jesus is Magic" and I must say it was pretty damn good.
Tuesday September 27, 2005 Recently I have discovered I love the Mojito. Not the Cuban Rum drink itself, as booze has still yet to pass the award winning lips of Ken Reid, but the general flavors. Lime, mint and vanilla. The Friendly Toast in Portsmouth,NH does an amazing Mojito Milkshake and Godiva chocolates makes incredibly Mojito Truffles. However, here is what I really want. Mojito Cheesecake. Are there any bakers or cheesecake wizzes out there who can create such a concoction for me? Wednesday August 31, 2005 Today I bring you a site dedicated to Jill Whitlow. The second hottest girl in "Weird Science" Friday August 26, 2005
On Wednesday night my theory that Puffy AmiYumi are the greatest band on earth was once again proven right. Thursday July 21, 2005 TODAY they are filming the DVD introductions for Retromedia's "Treasures of Black Cinema" DVDs (www.retromedia.org). Why am I telling you this? Because I wrote the introductions, and they are hosted by Richard "Shaft" Roundtree. So now I'm putting words in Shafts mouth. The DVDs should be in Best Buys and Tower Records and all other retailers in Jan of 06. It's not inherently comedic, but I think a VERY white suburban kid writing something called "The Treasures of Black Cinema" hosted by Shaft is funny. The fact that through this I was able to make Shaft himself look right into the camera and say "VooDoo" makes it the funniest thing I've ever done. Monday June 13, 2005 Ah, Summer. For most that means going to the beach, eating fried or frozen foods, having a fling with a lifeguard, the usual. For me however this means living vicariously through Beach Movies. So from the comfort of my air conditioner I'll be watching all manner of Summertime activities
Friday June 3, 2005
June has finally arrived, so I guess that's good. I had McDonald's for the first time in about four years last night. I'm not sure why, but I got a craving. I was thinking about Happy Meal toys, for some reason, which must have sparked it, and I must say, it felt good. It wasn't a "man I want some good burgers" craving, it was a "Man I want specifically the junk food garbage that passes for a burger that McDs makes" craving. I'll probably get another of those cravings sometime in 2009.
April 11, 2005 I found this shocking, Little Orphan Annie Fights terrorists now.? Very odd. I spent the weekend shopping and picked up some great original 1 sheet movie posters for such classics as "Thief", "Out of Bounds" (Anthony Michael Hall's action debut with Jenny Wright) and James Spaders finest, most unintentionally homoerotic movie "Tuff Turf", my life is one step closer to being complete.
March 23, 2005 I've found a new hobby that is killing loads of time. What is that hobby? Well I'll tell you, find personal information in Amazon.com movie reviews. I'll give you an example from the movie "Class":. Class / 1983 "How can a movie about a guy who sleeps with thre mother of his best best friend be funny. This is not a laughing matter. Families are destroyed in real life because of mommies going bad and sleeping with their sons best friends. I seen this happen in real life, and is no laughing matter. Shame on the producer of this movie." Now, clearly this guy had his best friend sleep with his mom, or something to that effect, so/but why in the name of all that's sweet and sugary would he post this on a major web site for all to see? Does he think this is a helpful review, to warn others of viewing it so the wound of their trampy moms won't reopen? Of course this guy's review could be a sarcastic tongue in cheek joke, but something leads me to believe it's not. Anyone else found any funny instances of this? Please email 'em my way.
March 22, 2005 Can anyone explain to me the movie NEON MANIACS? I've probably watched it 10 times in my life (starting with a foundly remembered USA Network's Saturday Nightmares appearance) and couldn't tell you. Where do they come from? Who wrote the script? Did he come up with an origin of these creatures ("biker, doc, samuari, ape....") and it got cut out or is he just some sort of insane person they hired like in the movie "Crazy People"? That being said I can recommend you pick up the DVD based on the trailer alone, it features my all time favorite voice over trailer guy, Percy Rodreguez. I did a fun show at Jimmy Tingle's Off Broadway last night, thanks to Myq Kaplan for having me on the show. I was allowed to induldge my life long dream of working in a video store. I gave out VHS tapes to auience members and I think some of them made out pretty well (especially the ones who recieved the movie "Vascectomy" staring Abe Vigoda and Paul Sorvino, and the chick from Oregon who go a copy of "Almost Pregnant" with the immortal Tanya Roberts).
March 14, 2005 Did you ever want a comprehensive list of every movie that ever contained a character wearing Chuck Taylor sneakers? Here is it now your life is complete. I highly recommend "Seven Minutes in Heaven", classic and it even features a guy named Zoo. On another note I realized there is yet another Jonathan Gries movie I know and love, "Terrorvision" he plays some kind of punk rock boyfriend to Diane Fanklin, the man is versitile, forget Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, Six Degrees of Jonathan Gries is the new hip game (and it rhymes). Anyone want to challenge me to a round of Six Degrees of Gries (as it shall henceforth be known) email me, we'll set something up.
March 7, 2005 This weekend on one my epic Saturday drives I came to an interesting conclusion. Apparently, over the years Jonathan Gries became my favorite actor and I didn't even know it. You know who he is, most of you probably know him as Uncle Rico in "Napoleon Dynamite", but he's oh so much more. I first encountered him as Lazlo in Real Genius (yes, the guy who lives in the closet). He also played a werewolf in two (count em) TWO of my favorite flicks, being Fright Night 2 and The Monster Squad. This weekend I even managed to track down and watch a film where he was the romantic lead, the terribly named but well done "Pucker Up and Bark Like a Dog", where he makes sex with Lisa "Billy is my Brother" Zane. It's a long, strange journey from Lazlo to Uncle Rico, with stops in Lisa Zane and werewolf make up along the way. The man has talent. Next weekend I'm going to have to attempt to continue with my Jonathan Gries viewing and watch his classic teen coming of age comedies "Joysticks" and "Swap Meet" (yes an 80s teen comedy about a swap meet, yet I can't sell a script...ah to live in more innocent times). Yet I wonder why nobody ever comes over my house on the weekends... On a completely unrelated note (well it's semi related as this IS featured in the movie "Joysticks") at some point, in the history of the world, there was a video game called STREAKING that was actually about STREAKING. If there is anyone out there that already knew that, I'll buy you a Cherry Vanilla Dr. Pepper.
March 1, 2005 I don't know if it's the snow or the cold medicine talking but I've come to the conclusion that writing for cartoons in the 70's and 80s was the greatest job on earth.
February 7, 2005 This weekend I discovered that a funny thing happens when one spends an entire Saturday night watching all the films in the Meatballs series (that’s parts I-IV). You realize that Meatballs II is a complete masterpiece of cinema. Sure, the juvenile antics of Flash seem dated, but does the biting ET Satire of Meathead? I think not. Easily Richard Mulligan’s finest role, far outshining his roles in The Heavenly Kid AND Finnigan Begin Again. Maybe it had to do with the five day old pizza, or the questionable chocolates, or the fact that it was roughly 2am when I was watching it, but I found Meatballs II to be a life changing experience. Taste it again for the first time.

I didn't want to make this Ken's link of the day but I couldn't resist. AMES has a fan club! It's amazing.
February 2, 2005
Every single time I've watched the movie Lost Boys I think to myself the same thing. This guy is really talented
January 31, 2005
Just got back from Orlando Florida. I was down there "on business" but being the grade A consumer (and lover all of Tat) I managed to make my way to the Murray Bros Caddyshack restaraunt. Yes, I'm the kind of guy who sitting in a general fare restaraunt shaped like a gopher hole and eating Babyruth Cheesecake appeals to. I'm also the type of guy who's trip highlight is urinating in a public restroom made to look like Carl the groundskeeper's tin shack.

Snow.
So today, the site officially went "live". I'm excited. No, not THAT excited, but excited none the less. I'm like Danni Minogue excited, it's not quite Kylie, but it'll do. |
Gang, "Very Special Episode" was a hit. It will be performed again in the future, so watch for it. In the mean time, keep checking my Myspace page for dates and blog updates.
